We provided pavement design and construction advice on this key local project.

The Opus design team to work closely with both the client, the engineer’s staff and sub-contractor to deliver this project within tight timeframes.

The contractor to the Fiji Roads Authority for the Buca Bay Road project, China Railway First Group (CFRG), engaged Opus to provide pavement design and construction advice.  This role included on-site inspections and testing and providing training of the contractor’s Fijian testing staff.

CFRG also engaged Opus to assess the options for two 26m span bridges that had already been constructed with sub-standard beams and three 12m span bridges for which sub-standard beams had been supplied to be upgraded to meet FRA durability requirements.

The option chosen for the three 12.0m span bridges was re-design of the bridge superstructure to use single hollow core beam bridges.  This choice allowed the Opus design team to complete the structural design for the beams and the modifications to the existing bridge abutments and the contractor to utilise the existing beam moulds within the tight delivery timeframe for the beam replacement.

The option proposed for the two 26m span I-Beam bridges was a fibre reinforced epoxy structural barrier coating of the beams that could be applied without demolition or modification of the existing bridge superstructures.  The ability of the Opus design team to work closely with both the client, the engineer’s staff and sub-contractor BBR Contech allowed Opus to identify the design standards and construction requirements for a design including both access scaffolding and specifications for a UV protected fibre reinforced epoxy structural barrier coating.
